DCU Film and TV new slate!

DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters

Films

Superman: Legacy

General Synopsis: The start of the DCU but not an origin story for Superman. The film will follow the younger days of Clark Kent as he balances his “Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing.” James Gunn is writing the script for Superman: Legacy and Peter Safran hopes Gunn will direct too. That role is yet to be officially decided though. A separate Superman movie produced by J.J. Abrams and written by Ta-Nehsi Coates remains in development and will exist under the DC Elseworlds banner should it move forward. Superman: Legacy will lead into the next DCU film, The Authority.

Release Date: July 11, 2025

The Authority

General Synopsis: The second film in the DCU is the cinematic introduction of The Authority, a team of superheroes with a less-than-idealistic approach to saving the world. The team was first introduced under the Wildstorm imprint at DC Comics in 1999 by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch and was later folded into the main DC Universe during the New 52 initiative in 2011. The team is mainly composed of characters from Ellis’ other team named Stormwatch. The Authority will explore the gray morality of crime-fighting when questionable heroes take up crime-fighting. The film is currently being written by a mystery writer.

Release Date: TBA

The Brave and the Bold

General Synopsis: The Brave and the Bold will introduce the Bat Family to the DCU. The film will focus on Batman’s relationship with Robin, who will be the fifth incarnation of the character Damien Wayne instead of Dick Grayson, Tim Drake, Stephanie Brown, or Jason Todd. This will feature a new iteration of Batman entirely separate from Robert Pattinson and Ben Affleck’s take on the character. James Gunn and Peter Safran say Damien Wayne is their favorite version of Robin, calling him an “assassin” and “a little son of a bitch.”The Brave and the Bold is said to be heavily inspired by Grant Morrison’s prolific comic run on the caped crusader as well as Tom King’s, focusing on Bruce and Damien’s father-son dynamics. The Brave and the Bold will lead into the next DCU film, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

Release Date: TBA

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow

General Synopsis: The next solo film of Superman’s cousin Kara Zor-El aka Supergirl. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be based on Tom King’s comic run of the same name from 2021 and 2022. It’s currently unknown if this film will feature the same version of the character played by Sasha Calle in The Flash. James Gunn describes this version of Supergirl as “much more hardcore” and is supposed to contrast with the new version of Superman that will be introduced in the DCU.

Release Date: TBA

Swamp Thing

General Synopsis: The next attempt to bring Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing to the big screen. Swamp Thing is said to dive deeper into horror than any other DCU project as fans explore the origins of the titular character, although the character is still planned to interact with the other regular heroes of the DCU since this “mashup quality” proved to work well for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Release Date: TBA

The Batman – Part II (Elseworlds)

General Synopsis: The much-anticipated sequel to The Batman. Matt Reeves will once again direct and is currently writing the script.

Release Date: October 3, 2025

HBO Max Shows

Creature Commandos

General Synopsis: A show based on the 1980s comic team of military superhumans, including a Vampire, Werewolf, and Frankenstein’s Monster, who fight nazis in World War II. The DCU adaptation will take a different approach though, as Weasel from The Suicide Squad, Nina Mazursky, Doctor Phosphorus, Eric Frankenstein, the Bride of Frankenstein, G.I. Robot, and Rick Flag’s father, Rick Flag Sr., now make up the titular team. This will be the DCU’s first animated series and is already in production. Every episode is written by James Gunn and some major characters are teased to also appear in live-action later down the line in the DCU and will be portrayed by the same actors.

Release Date: TBA

Waller

General Synopsis: A spin-off series following the mysterious schemes of Amanda Waller following the events of Peacemaker. Season 2 of Peacemaker has been put on hold due to James Gunn’s focus on Superman: Legacy and Waller setting the stage for the DCU. Viola Davis will return as Amanda Waller as well as other unnamed players of “team Peacemaker.” Both Creature Commandos and Waller are expected to debut before Superman: LegacyDoom Patrol creator Jeremy Carver will exectuive produce Waller with Christal Henry (Watchmen) writing.

Release Date: TBA

Paradise Lost

General Synopsis: A Game of Thrones-inspired fantasy series set on Themyscira long before the birth of Wonder Woman. The show will tell the origin of the Amazon’s all-female culture and society.

Release Date: TBA

Booster Gold

General Synopsis: The small screen DCU introduction of the self-absorbed and time-traveling hero from the future Michael Jon Carter aka Booster Gold first introduced to DC Comics by writer Dan Jurgens in 1986. The series is described to be a comedy as Gunn describes the character like “imposter syndrome as a superhero.”

Release Date: TBA

Lanterns

General Synopsis: A Green Lantern detective-like mystery series featuring both Hal Jordan and John Stweart. The two titular heroes will investigate a mystery that will tie into the larger DCU story seen in the films. The main inspiration for the series is said to be True Detective with it aiming to be “a huge HBO-quality event.” This project has officially replaced the Green Lantern HBO Max show that was being developed by Greg Berlanti.

Release Date: TBA

HBO MAX | JUSTICE LEAGUE’s Snyder Cut premieres on 2021

It’s official. HBO Max announced Wednesday that Zack Snyder’s director’s cut of Justice League will debut on the platform in 2021.

“I want to thank HBO Max and Warner Brothers for this brave gesture of supporting artists and allowing their true visions to be realized. Also a special thank you to all of those involved in the SnyderCut movement for making this a reality,” Snyder said in a statement.

The cries of #releasethesnydercut may have finally been answered.

On Wednesday, director Zack Snyder will host a watch party for his film Man of Steel—and if online buzz and speculation prove to be accurate, he may also use that opportunity to announce release plans for his fabled director’s cut of Justice League.

“It’s happening,” Peter Sciretta, the founder of fansite Slashfilm, wrote Monday on Twitter. Sciretta was one of a number of bloggers to make allusions to the forthcoming news.

“I’d watch this on Wednesday morning if I was y’all…just sayin’,” TheWrap film reporter Umberto Gonzalez added about the Snyder-hosted event.

A much-maligned box office disappointment, Justice League was supposed to ignite Warner Bros.’s interconnected universe of DC Comics heroes. But despite the presence of Batman (Ben Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Superman (Henry Cavill), The Flash (Ezra Miller), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), and Cyborg (Ray Fisher), the project was undone by production troubles and, for Snyder, personal tragedy. The version that arrived in theaters was a Frankenstein’s monster of Snyder’s vision and reshoots directed by Joss Whedon. In the aftermath of its calamitous release, Snyder devotees hit social media with a rallying cry: #releasethesnydercut.

“We the undersigned, call on Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. to distribute a director’s cut of the recent DC Films production Justice League,” wrote a group of fans on one high profile Change.org petition that had over 175,000 signatures before being closed. “We ask this with the utmost respect, and in no way seek to harm the profitability of the Justice League, or the reputations of those who worked hard to provide DC fans with a movie that many have been waiting decades for. Please don’t see this as a type of film review, we are not film critics nor have any interest in influencing creative direction, we are DC Films fans and look forward to and appreciate all films from the DC universe. It was simply to our dismay, not the film we were expecting.” So, what were they expecting?

What Is The Snyder Cut?

When Justice League was released on November 17, 2017, Snyder was the film’s sole credited director—but in name only. Six months earlier, Snyder had stepped away from the DC Comics film following the death of his daughter, Autumn. In his place, Whedon, director of the Marvel Studios blockbusters The Avengers and its sequel, The Avengers: Age of Ultron, was tapped to finish the film in post-production and guide any reshoots. “I want the movie to be amazing, and I’m a fan, but that all pales pretty quickly in comparison,” Snyder said at the time about his decision to leave the film in order to be with his family. “I know the fans are going to be worried about the movie, but there are seven other kids that need me. In the end, it’s just a movie. It’s a great movie. But it’s just a movie.”

Despite his confidence, the version of Justice League that arrived in theaters appeared to be at war with itself. Whedon, who may have reshot about 20% of the film, is known for his humorous wordplay and light touch; Snyder’s hallmark is the ultra-serious, often dour spin he puts on traditional blockbuster material. The aesthetics didn’t match, as evidenced from a rooftop chase scene between Batman and a low-level criminal played by Holt McCallany at the start of the film. “My scene with Batman was originally conceived as a comedic scene. That’s how Joss wrote it, and that’s how we shot it,” McCallany told Men’s Journal in 2017. “I thought it came out great, but the studio felt it would be a mistake to open the film with a completely comedic scene, so it was re-edited a little bit.”

Post-production troubles weren’t just limited to tone, either. After finishing Justice League, Cavill grew a mustache for his part in the Paramount sequel Mission: Impossible—Fallout. When Justice League reshoots were needed, Paramount refused to give its star the all-clear to shave. So rather than allow for a mustachioed Superman to appear onscreen, Warner Bros. edited out the mustache with some unfortunately obvious digital effects—including the very first scene of the film, in which Cavill-as-Superman directly addresses the camera. “I’m not sure which other studio did that opening shot on the cell phone but it’s dreadful,” an unnamed visual effects artist who claimed to work on DC Films said on Reddit in 2017. “It shouldn’t have been approved internally let alone gone all the way to make it into the film. That shocked me a bit. We were all looking at each other when the film started like ‘wtf is this?!’”

Unfortunately, even a clean-shaven Cavill probably wouldn’t have made much of a difference. Justice League was savaged by critics upon its release, and audiences mostly agreed with their assessment. The film grossed just $657 million worldwide on a reported but unconfirmed budget of $300 million, making it one of the most costly misfires ever released.

Does the Snyder Cut Exist?

Even before this week, DC Comics fans and even some of the director’s colleagues and coworkers remained adamant that a version of the film closer to Snyder’s original vision existed somewhere. “I’m not saying I’ve seen it, but if I HAD, I would unequivocally support the powers that be to #releasethesnydercut,” Watchmen showrunner Damon Lindelof wrote on Instagram in 2019. That post came amid a wave of support for the #snydercut from the Justice League cast, including Affleck and Gadot, who shared social media posts with the hashtag #releasethesyndercut, the rallying cry hardcore fans had long since adopted.

But even as a drumbeat of support from legitimate players continued, many observers felt the #syndercut might be more of a superhero Brigadoon. “It’s sad, because there’s zero chance that Warner will ever—there’s zero chance this will ever happen, and part of the reason involves money, and part of the reason involves ego,” New York Times reporter Brooks Barnes told The Ringer in June of last year in a piece on the cult of Snyder. “It’s a very well-meaning effort that, sadly, I hope people haven’t contributed a whole lot of their rent money to.”

No alt text provided for this image

In November, those comments were echoed by an anonymous source to Variety: “That’s a pipe dream,” said the source, whom Variety called a “knowledgeable insider.” “There’s no way it’s ever happening.”

As noted by the New York Times last year, completing Snyder’s version of Justice League likely required a large financial investment to finish the extensive special effects work.

Snyder, for his part, did little to disabuse the notion that his cut of Justice League was real. In December of last year, shortly after the coordinated push from the Justice League cast, Snyder posted a photo on Vero, his social media platform of choice: It was a picture of film cans labeled Justice League Director’s Cut.

“Is it real? Does it exist?” he wrote over the image. “Of course it does.” If rumor becomes reality, HBO Max subscribers will soon get to see if #releasethesnydercut was worth the wait.

BATMAN V SUPERMAN: The Bat Steals the Show

I get now why people and critics hated Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, it’s hard to swallow the end. Not only the story it’s pretty confusing and unfair with many characters, it’s quite a mess altogether.

And in spite of that, it’s a better film than Star Wars: Episode VII.

a3cylk.jpg

If you haven’t seen the film yet, I would advise caution for the SPOILERS ahead.

First of all, let’s break it out and start with what were the worst things on the film:

LEX.jpg

Lex Luthor: What’s the deal with this character? Since I’ve heard that Jesse Eisenberg was cast for the role, I was like, really? You couldn’t get like Edward Norton or something? The last Luthor was Kevin Spacey, they’ve should tried harder. I’m not saying that Jesse it’s a bad actor, he’s not, but here he was intentionally trying to portrait a sort of Heath Ledger’s Joker, nothing to do with the actual Lex Luthor from the comics. He also didn’t have a background story or even an explanation to his obsession with Superman, even though that he’s the most important villain on the Man of Steel universe. They didn’t make justice to this character, they burn it off. It’s awkward and confusing. And also he apparently has mystical powers, he guessed that Superman was Clark Kent and Batman Bruce Wayne, really? And also, the absurd of him stealing a Kryptonian ship, Zod’s Body and without a “How to” tutorial, made Doomsday from scratch. A total fiasco.

image38.jpg

Wonder Woman: DC, if you’re really that desperate with falling behind Marvel, you’ve already did, there’s no need to rash into things. Gal Gadot it’s not Wonder Woman, period.  Even though the actress has a military background she looks and behaves like a Miss Universe contestant. The girl can’t act or fight looking badass. And most importantly, her storyline doesn’t make any sense on this film. She’s here only because she was stalking Luthor for a picture he stole from her and then she fights Doomsday. A pathetic attempt to bring a new character to life.

FLASH.jpg
There’s no actual still from The Flash, this is director Zack Snyder with his costume behind.

The Flash: There’s no way to explain how terrifying it was sawing that clip when Ezra Miller (Flash) was saving that shop. I cannot even begin to explain the disaster that movie it’s going to be, opposite to the CW version. But that’s not actually the Flash cameo and this is what gets pretty confusing. Batman has a nightmare Mad Max like, post-apocalyptic with Superman as a villain and then he wakes up with Flash apparently crossing a bridge in time from the future telling him that Lois Lane is the key. Many debate that he was referring to the fight with Doomsday that she had the spear and others say that it refers to a future film. In any case, I didn’t understand that it was Flash until he says “I’m too soon”, that thing didn’t look like Flash, it was too quick, at first I thought Batman was still on his nightmare state and that was Robin, I thought I’ve seen a mask and later a moustache and I then I was like “Zorro?”. Awful.

doomsday2.png

The Doomsday Situation: I don’t know what came off with Zack Snyder. He used to be a great director, Watchmen, you know what I mean. Who in the hell he think he is to kill Superman? He cannot do that. I’ve heard fans roaring over the internet complaining, that they’re not comic geeks, they’re fans of the movies and TV Shows and one does not simply go to a movie theatre to watch the drama of a beloved character dying. It’s all good if in the 50 year long comic universe in some way or another they run out of ideas and kill main characters, but it’s wrong doing in film. Superman didn’t have the chance to tell his story. He barely appears on BvS and one solo film it’s not enough, period. If they want to make us believe that he survived, with the final shot of dirt levitating from his casket, they did it wrong. They’ve tried and failed to make an “Inception Move” without Nolan in the film. The whole Doomsday existence in this film was ridiculous, made from scratch by Luthor’s hands and fighting also with Wonder Woman. It looked like a Circus and it was disrespectful to all the audience.

SUP.jpg

The trouble is, I’m not really sure that Superman survives this blast. I’ve had the opportunity to interview Henry Cavill for Man of Steel and when I asked him how did he prepared for the role, he told me he wasn’t a comic geek so he only read a few of Superman comics and one of them was “The Death of Superman”. I now think that Cavill signed a contract for two movies and by the time he knew that Superman was meeting his fate with Doomsday on BvS. Weeks after I’ve interviewed him, WB made the announcement of this film. Here you can’t watch my conversation with the late Superman:

Now, after explaining all the wrong doing in the film, there was only one thing really good in it, Ben Affleck as Batman.

BAT.jpg

I was really surprise of this conclusion, since I was outraged when I found out that he was portraying Batman a few years ago.

It seems to me that all the bullying that Affleck received after the revealing of BvS cast ensemble, he really took close to the chest this project.

His portraying of the cape crusader was simply amazing, since the first sequence of the film, when he runs down to Metropolis on Zod’s day, a very 9/11 scenario.

The fighting scenes with Batman solo and with Superman are over the top, his training motto and all his interactions with Alfred (Jeremy Irons).

He took very seriously the responsibility of bringing this character to life and nailed it and I’m really happy for it. I’m thankful, he was an awesome thing to watch on this film.

Even though I thought they went too far with both the nightmare sequences, Affleck did a really great job.

In fact, I’m really excited to see what’s he’s going to do with Batman, now that he’s also directing his solo movie. We all know he’s an Oscar director and screenplayer.

Now, I’m not all for pointing the flaws of a film without bringing anything into the table.

In my opinion, this is how the movie should have been:

  • Superman is dealing with the aftermath related with his Zod’s encounter since eight months ago, the public rejection, the hatred of Batman/Bruce Wayne and the obsession of Lex Luthor.

  • Batman on the other hand, is having business transactions with Luthor Corp as Wayne Company, this because he’s investigating something weird terrorist related that’s going on Lex backyard. Also, he hates Superman after that he took down Wayne’s building on Metropolis eight months ago, and in some way the man of steel its meddling with Bat’s business so that’s what makes them fight on the end.

  • Lex Luthor on my version it is obsessed with aliens, especially Superman, maybe we can see a background story telling us why this happens and he’s in fact experimenting with alien technology plus weird creatures and that leads him to his shock with Wonder Woman.

  • In my movie, Wonder Woman has a meaning, more than promoting her solo film. “The Monster” that the three of them fight on the end is a villain from Wonder Woman’s comic universe, that’s it. That’s why she’s on this movie and it makes sence.

  • There’s no Doomsday on mi story. Period.

  • The Flash cameo it’s the same that the Aquaman and Cyborg ones, on a stalker file that Batman and Wonder Woman found on Luthor’s archives.

  • The tragic death on my film is Lois Lane. She dies on the final battle, as a victim and that gives the drama necessary for the film and strength to the joining forces of what would be the future Justice League, starring Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman.
