MOVIE REVIEW- STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER

Well, the moment is finally here. The longest sci-fi saga in movie history has ended. Satisfied? It has mixed reviews.

This is more a rant than a review, so beware. The first part is going to be SPOILER FREE, the real spoilers of the final installment begins when I shout the word.

Quite a few people, mostly press, around the Globe has already seen STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER and the reactions as I have said are mixed.

Nevertheless, this I can tell you: It is worth to watch on the big screen; visually it is stunning and full of action sequences. That is good; thinking the big battle of the year was the one in Avengers: End Game.

I honestly had to sleep it off before ranting, though I have quite a few remarks, this ending left me troubled and I cannot say in a good or a bad way. It is fair to say that I am the only one I know, and I know quite a few experts, that predicted “who” Rey was. I said, “what if” and it was. That part pleased me.

Then again, confused. So I am not going to tell you if it is good or bad, I cannot, I don’t want to spoil anything. Go to the movies and make your own conclusions.

Now it’s SPOILER ZONE, beware if you haven’t watch the film yet.

You have been warned.

It is not a surprise that many of the audience will be angry at this story’s ending, it does not make any sense and here is why. Who the hell are this people? (Rey, Poe, Finn) Hear me out.

Yes, when we met Luke for the first time it was similar to Rey and the events unfolded almost in a parallel way. However, the big difference is that these original three films have forty years old; this three people became quite the worldwide phenomenon in the pop culture sphere.

That is why when we went to Episode I, to Vader’s origin story, it took three episodes to get to know him and this is why, this trio of unknown and apparently irrelevant new people was not working from the starting point, The Force Awakens.

To say that Kylo Ren was on point when he told her something in the likes of “you are no one in this story”. It is true, no matter whom they invent she is. If she is THIS important to the main plot, they should have revealed her in layers like they did with Anakin.

If the origin story on Episode I was Luke’s, it’ll have to start in a point when he’s a child and you wouldn’t reveal his past right away, but it works the way it is, since their story is in the middle of another big one and it has 40 years of fame.

So, stating all that, I said to a few friends and colleagues: I think they are trying to distract us with all this Jedi nonsense and that girl came from Palpatine, she is a Palpatine.

For me, that was an amazing and worthy twist and when I saw it unfolding on the movie I say, the only way that this is going to be really good for the end of this nonsense story is that she sacrifices herself for the greater good and she didn’t. Instead, they did a Harry Potter vs Voldemort scene in which all the ghosts are in Harry’s wand, with a fatal end.

Ben Solo sacrifice was more worthy of attention than anything this girl did and he faded away, as the last Skywalker.

I understand J. J. Abrams stated that Star Wars is a franchise for children, but in theory also is Harry Potter and had a realistic and worthy ending, with well-developed characters.

In this storytelling disaster I thought that the thing Kylo had to do at the end, that he did not think was strong enough, was to kill Rey. Moreover, that would have been magnificent.

She dies to exterminate the Sith’s, her legend lives on and Ben Solo retreats to the Jedi island. That is my perfect ending for a disaster of storytelling.

Not Poe, Finn or anyone else on this new storyline has the punch the original cast had or maybe they are all the same, but without the humongous fame.

Rey is a good character, but as I have explained, it needed to be slowly revealed not throw her in our faces without warning and with something as huge as her last name on the back.

I do not know if Disney’s intend with this final scene was to promote adoption, I do not say its not good, but it is so disrespectful with the original story it makes me sick. She is not a Skywalker, Ben Solo was and maybe this had a feminist politically correct agenda. However, the thing they do not understand is that if she truly sacrificed herself, that would have put her, above all of them and it will be the feminist statement to make.

Since I am ranting, there is too much to say, but basically, it is what I have stated. Adam Driver, an amazing actor, could have done so much more with that character. It was awfully build since the beginning, everyone seems to forgive him for killing Han Solo in every corner and that did not make any sense since it did not work or transformed the character at all.

Another good ending that I have had in mind for this awful written story, was the equilibrium of the Force. Ben and Rey joining forces, Ben being a true Skywalker Jedi and Rey a Palpatine Sith. In the joining of the forces, it is the real strength and rule the galaxy fairly and in harmony, knowing that they will probably end up together. This is a mellow Disney ending but it’s a really good one philosophically speaking, it sends a good message, extremes are not good and love will prevail. The Ying Yang.

But then again, If we have bad directing mixed with bad storytelling, we get a bunch of no one’s all of the sudden pretty important and a truly someone, not making any sense on the main plot.

Here is where we stand, this is what we got. Is it Disney’s fault? I don’t think so. People love to blame Disney for everything when we have to thank them to give the opportunity. The issue here is as simple as television cannot be better written than a movie and it usually is, if you need to do 3 more episodes or even one more (10) to get it right, then do it. If you rush it, it does not end well. As we witnessed it.

May the force be with you, always.
